|Until the mid 1990s when Albert Park Indoor Sports Centre commenced operation in the Pit Buildings indoor soccer in Melbourne was mainly played in indoor cricket centres within nets. When the Centre opened management decided to dispense with the nets and play futsal, the international version of indoor soccer – the game played on an open court.
Since the first six teams on a Monday night at Albert Park the game has grown so much in popularity that nearly 400 teams are now registered with Albert Park and its associated venues throughout Melbourne, at Richmond, Brunswick, Princess Hill (Carlton), Elwood and South Yarra. Competitions are held nightly from Sunday to Thursday inclusive. A local futsal competition for juniors in Port Phillip is held on Saturday afternoon during school terms.
Albert Park recognizes that its players are amateurs and play for social and fitness reasons. Accordingly, although futsal is a low contact sport, some futsal rules have been modified in its domestic competitions to provide further player protection to all players generally and to women in mixed games.
With almost 400 teams playing with us we can cater for teams of any standard.
